So as Eremite and Z9484 can probably attest I am a Battle for Wesnoth junkie. I play it a lot. Probably too much. But come on, it doesn’t take mad clicking/moving computer/videogame skills, just some brain power and a little patience (and the occasional save cheat
). I just really enjoy playing it and seeing it develop. Thanks to Kitty and others it looks Really nice now. And of course its Free and Open Source. Very Good.
Because I play it so much I have won all the main line campaigns (except Delfador’s Memoirs because I haven’t got the newest version yet). I’ve even replayed many of those campaigns, especially Liberty and Tale of Two Brothers. But recently I’ve been trying out the add on campaigns. Some I’ve been very impressed with. They are fun to play, they look good, the stories are good, and some just have new and interesting twists. Some other campaigns on the other hand have been flops in my opinion. They had too much text, or just seemed to go on indefinitely. Or then there are the ones that only have 1 or 2 scenarios.
So here is a brief commentary on just a few of the campaigns I’ve played:
I liked how Dead Water had its loyal units distinguishable. It was interesting overall (especially as I am working on my own campaign that happens to be merfolk based). The Case of the Scepter (I think that was what it was called) with the illustrious Homz and Flotsom was just silly, and having essentially three Delfador’s just made things a bit boring sometimes, although the variety of recruits was interesting. There was also a Drake based campaign (which I forgot the name of) that I did not enjoy, I didn’t get very far either before I gave up. It was just no fun to play with ugly looking Drakes that can’t breathe fire. A Fiery menace, one of those that are not complete was sort of fun because it was so different, although it was tricky to figure out some of the puzzles. I hope people still continue to work on that one. And I’m currently in the middle of The Scepter of Life, the story of which I am deeply involved in, but having a wimpy leader can be annoying and I really don’t like when campaigns get rid of your recalls.
One of the things I like best though, about almost all the Wesnoth campaigns is that everyone makes them in the Wesnoth world. It just gives the whole game a certain continuity. Whether those campaigns are of great historical importance to the world of Wesnoth — like Heir to the Throne, or Rise of Wesnoth– or “a mere footnote in the history books” — as in Story of a Wose or The South Guard they all give each other a depth and even a caring for what happens that one on its own could not give by itself.
I like Wesnoth, if you couldn’t tell.
And hopefully I will soon be adding to this World.
