History of Virtual Kingdoms
The site was originally called Virtual Realms and showed off a few things I did with computer graphics in high school. It was first hosted on a small free webhost (that I can’t remember the name.) They started to become very restrictive so I moved to tripod.co.uk. They worked out quite well, even allowing mysql database support (ie the forums were born) all without ads. The majority of the traffic was concentrated on the Phpbb Forums. Which unlike now were quite active. It did not last at tripod however as the whole internet (especially the free sector) felt the impact of the internet bubble burst or the dot com bomb as they say. Tripod came under new management (Lycos) and soon went downhill from there. They forced of all abominations a frame ad. When can a frame ad (or frames even) ever make your site look good? I soon decided that free webhosting at that time was dead. I began the search for a paid host. I found a host called modhost and was there for five and a half years. In 2009 I switched to RailsPlayground in order to obtain Ruby on Rails support. The VirtualKingdoms.net domain was created on October 21, 2003. The official VK blog was started in January of 2005. Virtual Kingdoms has expanded since then to include a few more areas:
Free / Open Source Software with an emphasis on games.
Digital Photography
Stop Motion Lego Films
Book and Movie Reviews
