The betrayer’s engine was quite outdated compared to recent development on KQ. I think it was based off a 2006 or 2007 release. Something had to be done, so I decided to refork KQ and try to keep the engine up to date this time. I have finished the reforking. The Betrayer Subversion “trunk” is up to date with the KQ cvs. As well as having the changes that I have made: Portrait dialogues, 4 player parties, varying store prices, new graphics, and a few other minor changes. Some of the new changes that the KQlives team added are a lua console in debug mode, translation support, and bug fixes. Now I need to work on the story, some side quests and balancing. Then it will be time for another release. (I’m shooting for sometime this summer)

workaround for sound in kqthebetrayer
I found a workaround to get sound to work for kqthebetrayer (or kq) in Ubuntu 9.04 or higher. The problem has to with pulseaudio so killing pulse will do the trick. I tried the pulse suspender but that didn’t work for me.
killall pulseaudio
And then just start kq.
Pulse is placed over the top of alsa so your sound should continue to work. You can easily restart pulse by doing a
Digital Distribution for Games
So is digital distribution the next best thing? Instant gratification is quite convenient. I wish more companies would put up their old games for download (for a reasonable fee if they insist). Its funny they have nothing to lose and money to gain. I mean especially with how the economy is. Nintendo’s stance on this is very irritating. If they hadn’t noticed just because they sell some of their old games for the Wii people still want to play it on their PC. Lucas Arts has been the same way except they don’t sell any of their old games. It makes no sense. If they put a really small old game up for download, people will pay for it. I really wish there was a legal way in obtaining these games like Monkey Island and Quest for Glory.
The companies that I have had experience with:
Blizzard: They offer Warcraft 3 and the Expansion Frozen Throne, Starcraft and Diablo II. A little bit pricey for 6+ year old games. And they really should offer their older titles like Warcraft 1 and 2.
Steam: I bought Commander Keen 1-5 for $4.99. Its lame that the huge and bloated steam program is required to download their games but the price was good. They have a big selection but I saw nothing else I’m interested in.
Good Old Games: I bought Earthworm Jim 1 and 2 for $5.99. They have a decent selection which is getting better every week. They are very committed to being DRM Free which is a big plus. They also throw in any extra goodies they can find with your purchase; like pdf manuals, backgrounds, icons, soundtracks. Good old Games is the best option in my opinion.
Speaking of Quest for Glory, I was able to find Hero’s Quest 1 SCI, Quest for Glory 3 and 4 as well as Kings Quest 4 at the used game store Fun Unlimited in Logan, Utah. Which was very exciting. The Quest for Glory 4 cd was scratched but I got them for the license anyways. I never expected to find them all in one place. Since AGD released their QFG2 Remake, now I’m only missing Quest For Glory 5 which is going for $40-50 used. I also got Dungeon Siege 1, which is quite fun to play multiplayer for how simple it is.
KQ the Betrayer now on Ohloh
KQ the Betrayer is now on Ohloh, the open source network. Mainly because their data crawler already added it last December. So I figured I might as well make their information accurate and up to date. Some of the info is actually pretty cool.
Warcraft 3
I have been playing a lot of Warcraft 3 recently, thanks to Blizzard’s digital downloads. I beat the campaigns for Reign of Chaos last night. So now I’m on to the Frozen Throne campaigns. Now I know why WOW is the most popular MMORPG these days. Blizzard actually spent some time making interesting races with backstories. Its not the best plot but it keeps you interested. The heroes really make Warcraft 3 stand out from other RTS games. Though they should make more of the settings changeable in game like the population limit (90 for regular and 100 for expansion). You can up the food limit to 300 in the the constants editor in the Frozen Throne Map editor. But they really should have done that in game. I know their idea is to focus on smaller squad based battles. But who doesn’t want epic battles some times. Most of all the maps have really limited gold which I find very frustrating. When your heroes, and armies are finally ready you attack the enemy only to find empty bases because they ran out of gold. So thats another thing to change in the map editor. I understand once you get better at it then it would be easy enough to beat the enemies before all the gold runs dry. I guess I’m used to long epic battles like TA, TAK, Supcom so it takes some getting used too.
A really fun multiplayer hero based multiplayer map for Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne is called Defense of the Ancients. You can get the map with really hard AI opponents at Dotahomer’s DOTA AI You control a hero whose job it is to defend your town and destroy the enemy’s. There are tons of heroes and items to chose from so you don’t get bored. Its a little lame that DOTA only has one map but you get used to it.
New webhost
We are now hosted on www.Railsplayground.com. It will take some time to get everything up and running nicely. There are some changes planned as well. (A new theme hopefully). It also means you will have to create a new user account on the blog. WordPress doesn’t transfer as gracefully as phpbb.
If you find any dead links or have any suggestions don’t hesitate to add a comment.
Supreme Commander
So I finally bought a computer. I ordered all the parts from www.newegg.com. Which turned out to be a good deal even though I missed the rebate time limits (which are only like 2 weeks). So with a new computer I decided to get a game that actually used the hardware, so I got Supreme Commander Gold. The graphics are amazing. But for some things Chris Taylor let me down. One of the big things is that groups don’t work as well as in Total Annihilation. You can now have units in 2 different groups at the same. Cool right? Except you can’t seem to clear that group easily. In TA it was very efficient to have buildings assigned group numbers and all the units built by them would automatically join the group. If you built a builder it was easy to change it to a new group. In supcom it remembers both assignments so your builders will march off to war with your army. And if you try to re group your army without the builders the factory won’t be added to the group.
The Camera controls in RTS Spring are a lot better then Supcom. They could have learned a lesson there. You can only rotate the camera by pressing space bar when your near the ground. And then its only about that one point. Its easy to control but it’s effectively useless. I also find it annoying that mobile builders lose their build commands after they are moved. Pausing construction would have been a lot less frustrating.
The AI is very good at taking mass deposits, especially yours. I find it really hard to defend them. Too bad there’s no builder AIs like in Spring. eg go out and build metal extractors and energy producers in this area. Because there is no chance that your far flung mass extractors will last long. The support commander supposedly will rebuild things but I haven’t been able to try it out yet. The T3 and T4 level buildings take a very long time to reach and build. But those experimental units are truly awesome when completed.
Last Scenario
Well I have to say I found the ending of Last Scenario quite disappointing. Enough so that I didn’t actually finish it. I just watched someones terrible recording on youtube to see the ending. (They clicked through all the dialogue so I had to try to pause it on every dialogue box. Youtube’s seeking is terrible so you can only jump to certain checkpoints in the file. That’s probably because of it having a .flv container. But it was extremely annoying. Why else would I want to watch the ending of a fan rpg that has shoddily recorded oldschool graphics? Its not like its footage of FFXIII or anything)
It starts out and I found Hilbert the main character kind of annoying, and naive following a standard plot. But then everything gets thrown out the window and your traveling around the world as a Special Ops team (With you armed with a bow). You find yourself caught in a long series of events. And all these events have to do with every kingdom you set foot in falling to chaos. Assassinations, political intrigue, the works. Through all this you get acquainted with the 8 playable characters and their troubled back-stories. This is one ambitious fan project. Unfortunately the ending just doesn’t deliver. Around 25 hours of playing and around level 65 you get to the end of the storyline. The final storyline boss is in a cave that you use your airship to get to. But the boss is just too strong and there is no way to buy the sacred orbs that heal your entire party in a battle. So you have to level your character. And then level. And then level. Oh yeah and then level some more. I tried with my party at level 75 and it wasnt good enough. (I probably could have fought smarter but it was just to annoying for me to bother.) Why would I want to level up to the max. Level 99 i think. It is probably very doable at around 85 with all the ultimate weapons. (You always find better weapons then you can ever buy.) There are extra dungeons to go to get those ultimate weapons but they have no story just fight lots of monsters. Then you go to the next area. It just didn’t keep my interest. So if you actually want to finish I would suggest to try to do more leveling up before each next plot segment.
This game is quite linear- almost always only one way to do everything. This game is heavily inspired by the final fantasy series. You always have to have airships. The magic is somewhat like materia but it doesn’t level up. You only have to attach spell card to the player and then they know the spell. An annoying thing was most spellcards come with modifiers. Like this offensive spell takes away a % of your health and strength. Quite annoying. Sometimes the modifiers helped so your character has useless spells equipped just for their effects.
Some things I found lame. Like you have 8 playable characters at the end of the game but you can only battle with 4. And you can only switch the party at save points. The rest of the party is just useless and just give up if the four battle characters die.
You cant change what type of weapons your players have. For instance Hilbert has a bow and thats your only choice. You can get better bows but thats it. So basically the different weapon types have absolutely no meaning. Bow, sword, axe, staff, throwing daggers, crystal, staff, spear they all act the same. Just the various types of bow have a higher attack then others.
The monsters are also not very exciting. And the game follows a very scripted pattern(for how crazy the plot is) Go fight monsters. Get treasure Fight big boss monster. Get more treasure. Rinse and repeat. I guess thats a over generalization of most RPGs but not unfounded. Up ahead I see a save point and a door. That means save and heal before the boss and then your most probably free for a while. Many monsters are lame like walls and books.
Well i cant deny that it is a interesting game. I didn’t put up a link because I never found an official site for it. Maybe this was the last fan project the guy did. I would not surprised if it is. (The scope is huge for a fan game. It even has it’s own board game. But I never bothered playing more then 2 or 3 times). So just google Last Scenario and you will find it.
Why Open Source?
I have recently been working on my open source project a role playing game (RPG) called, “KQ the Betrayer”. I have also started a tentative new open source project with my sister. It is a merfolk campaign for the game, Battle for Wesnoth.
So what is up with this Open Source or Free Software Movement anyways? It is simply a way of releasing intellectual property (such as ideas, stories, programs, pictures, etc) with “some rights reserved” instead of all. Commercial or propriety software has its disadvantages. Such as the recent move by Microsoft to create a new docx format that is incompatible with the old version of Word. In their way forcing people to upgrade to the latest version. One of the most irritating problems of copyright can be avoided. If a company goes under and does not sell the rights to their program, book or movie or whatever the work dies with company. You then have to wait the 70 or something years till the copyright expires. You might get lucky and find it at a yard sale but other then that it is impossible to obtain it legally. This can be avoided if the works are released under a free license when a company goes under. (That is how Blender became open source) The most common licenses for free culture are the Creative Commons licenses and the GPL license for software. The GPL requires that the source code for a open project must be made available and subsequent changes to that source code must keep that same license.
Many Open Source programs have become quite popular due to their high quality and availability. Here is a list of some common open source programs that you may have already used. All of which are free to download:
Firefox – web browser
Open Office – Document Editing Suite
Gnucash – personal and small business accounting program
Tellico – Book/Collection Manager
Linux – Operating system
The Gimp – Image manipulation tool
Inkscape – Vector graphics program
Blender – 3D Modeling software
Dosbox – run all those old dos programs you have in the basement
WordPress – Blogging software
Battle for Wesnoth – Turn Based Strategy Game
Some people wonder why developers spend hours volunteering to create hardware or software or even Operating Systems in their spare time and then just give it all away. One of the reasons is called egoboo. Here is the definition from Wikipedia (another free culture project) “egoboo is a colloquial expression for the pleasure received from public recognition of voluntary work.” For some people that recognition and the feeling of being needed and wanted is motivation enough. The free software movement also fights piracy by providing free and legal alternatives to expensive Microsoft and Apple programs. Recently a volunteer group held a Blender training session in Nigera. Commercial 3D Modeling and animation tools cost hundreds to thousands of dollars that only run on high end machines. Instead they can use Blender which is free and runs fine on desktop computers. Open Source programs provide them and others around the world with access to these new and developing job fields that otherwise would be too expensive to try. I like to do a lot of different things with the computer. Open source programs allow people like me to try a little bit of everything without blowing my life savings on hundreds of different programs. (Try to make a movie and you will realize how many different programs you need.)
Personally, I couldn’t care less about egoboo. Here are some of my reasons why I work on open source programs. I use all of the above listed open source programs. With that, it makes me want to do something to contribute back to the free software movement. I like to play computer games and come up with weird fantasy stories. So I decided to develop a 2D “old school” RPG. There are almost no complete open source RPG’s in this category. Unfortunately I don’t have the skills or time to make a new game from scratch. Instead my project “The Betrayer” is based off an existing open source game called KQLives. Because it is an open source program released under the GPL I am allowed to “fork” or create a new project from the old project. My game has a different story and new features that are not in the original. I have also made pixel art for my game some of which has been accepted back into the original KQLives Project. Editing an existing project has really helped me to learn how to program for real world projects. In most of the programming classes I’ve taken, you have to “reinvent the wheel” every time you write a program. In the real world you have to work a lot with other people’s code(decipher what its doing) which I have found to be an interesting challenge. And sometimes I find it nice to have something productive to do that is not school or work related.
So if you haven’t tried out an open source program, now is the time to try one out. (No purchase necessary)
The Betrayer now supports 4 player party
Well I haven’t given up on work on the Betrayer. I recently added support for up to a 4 player party. There are still some visual problems with interface menus but its fully functional.
And I have been playing a free linear story-based RPG named Last Scenario. Its a very professional looking game with a few exceptions(one random enemy is a wooden wall and another was a rolleyes which was just a rolling eyes smiley. Yeah lame). My current playtime is at around 15 hours. I will give a full review later.
