KQ the Betrayer 0.2.7 Released

Postby Z9484 » Thu Feb 07, 2008 12:08 am

KQtheBetrayer is a free game released under the Gnu Public License v2 that I am currently developing with the help of Shrike. "The Betrayer" features over 20 original maps to explore. The tilesets have been updated with around 50 more tiles than the classic KQLives.

Story
In a land surrounded by the vastness of oceania there were three kingdoms, that of Akanthos, Diduma, and Krayiet. After a brutal war the king of Diduma was captured by the forces of Akanthos. The kingdom of Diduma was then placed under their rule. You are Corin, the son of a tailor in the conquered town of Maldon, Diduma.

Here's what I did to get it the debian package to work on Ubuntu Gutsy:

After installing the allegro libraries (sudo aptitude install liballegro4.2-dev) I kept getting this:

undefined symbol: _install_allegro_version_check

So Google led me to http://www.allegro.cc/forums/thread/588905 where Peter Wang said:

You will get this error if you have a program compiled with 4.2.1, run against a 4.2.0 library. Probably you have 4.2.0 installed on your system.

I couldn't see how to get 4.2.1 with aptitude and so I went to http://alleg.sourceforge.net/wip.html and downloaded the end user version of 4.2.2 (direct link: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/alle ... z?download)

I unpacked it and did the regular:

./configure
make
make install

to install it. It produced a warning at the end so I added

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/local/lib

to my ~/.bashrc

and then I typed kq and it ran!

(I also tried downloading the source but simply untarring complained:

gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

and after installing lua and libdumb1-dev on the configure I couldn't get past

configure: error: Aldumb not found)

Good luck to all.

Hopefully you're interested in feedback:

When you talk to the old lady in the library she spells chief wrong:

The Cheif Librarian for instance is sworn...

should be

The Chief Librarian for instance is sworn...

or even better, perhaps, would be Head Librarian.

Oh, and when I tried to deliver to the governor's house, it crashed and said it couldn't load the manorx map or something like that.

All the errors that you mentioned should now be fixed with the new versions.
The source now extracts. For some reason a file called "include/mpcx.h" gets created and put in the data folder. Which must not really exist so you couldnt extract it or copy it.
The debian package should now have all the necessary files. It just had an incomplete makefile so checkinstall never added it to the package.

I tried Kqthebetrayer and kqlives on a Virtual box Win2000 machine and neither would really run. You had to hold down the window for it to work. And even then it would break after a 30 seconds to a minute.

Well, I beat it and found it quite enjoyable.

I think my favorite part was fighting the skeletons on the island.
